The course Physics 3 (FYSFYS03, 100p) will be given at the Department of Physics at the University Göteborsgs starting in January 2014. The course will be teached by active researchers at the University of Gothenburg. The course is offered to all students attending a natural science program or technology program in the Gothenburg region. By locating the course to the University of Gothenburg it can be given a modern content, and also act as a bridge between high school and college.
According to the curriculum, set by the Board of Education, Physics 3 contains essentially the two subjects' Movements and Forces "and" Matter and Materials". In particular the latter part is strongly linked to current research and modern applications. It is therefore possible to, in the context of the curriculum, offering a course with a unique content that extends to the modern research. The course is tough by experts in the different fields. We will be offering course modules that deal with, for example, electron microscopy, laser spectroscopy, and medical applications. We will also take advantage of the broad expertise available at the University of Gothenburg in related subjects. For examples chemistry (Matter department), biology (modern microscopy) and geology (waves in the crust) are areas that will be included in the course.
The course will be given during the spring semester in year three, and ends in early May. The teaching will be done with a session per week in the late afternoon/evening. All teaching will be scheduled within a given block of time (eg Tuesdays 17-21). Teaching will take place at the Department of Physics at the University of Gothenburg at Chalmers campus Johanneberg. All students taking Physics 2 are allowed to participate and it is adapted first of all for interested students and should not be seen as an advanced (difficult) course.
Day Hanstorp is the tutor and examiner. He is a professor of experimental physics and is a licensed teacher of mathematics and physics for high school. He has applied for teacher certification. In addition, several guest lectureres will appear. Problem solving sessions will be led by graduate students in physics.
