Caroline Beck Adiels awarded 8 million in research funding

News: Oct 16, 2018

The Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research, SFF, will be giving out 236 million kronor in total to 33 different projects set to promote advanced research and innovation. Among the recipients is Caroline Beck Adiels, researcher at the Department of Physics, University of Gothenburg. The funding will be put to use in a project where the research group creates chip that act as an artificial liver, to tailor medical treatment.

Congratulations! How does it feel?Caroline Adiels
Thank you! It feels fantastic, of course! This funding arrives right on time, which makes everyone involved very happy and excited.

What happens now, in the short term?
The announcement came so recently that we haven’t had the time to sit down and discuss how to proceed, but our application referenced, among other things, a need to recruit new people, so our focus will most definitely lie there to begin with. This funding truly helps us see how our research ideas could manifest and become reality.

What will the funding mean for your research in the long term?
This is confirmation that we are on the right track, and hopefully it will make it easier to get further funding for adjacent projects. Additionally, the grant provides an important milestone for both national and international collaborations, something that had already been initiated but could that we could, hopefully, expand on more. It’s important to point out that this project would be impossible if we hadn’t founded an interdisciplinary team where I personally have been backed up by both senior colleagues, current and former PhD-students and postdocs.

How will you celebrate?
Initially I treated the team to homemade cinnamon buns, but as soon as we’re all gathered again I think the occasion calls for something a bit more robust!
